Los Angeles, Hollywood and Occidental College:
SOCAPA's Summer Programs in Los Angeles are hosted at Occidental College, one of the oldest and most beautiful college campuses in the West. Situated just across Griffith Park from Studio City and Universal Studios Hollywood, Occidental's Eagle Rock neighborhood has a cozy, suburban feel while being close to all the action of the big city. "A small town in the big city, Eagle Rock is a multicultural neighborhood with upscale restaurants, coffee shops, and art galleries." (LA Times)
Students in the Los Angeles program enjoy the advantages of being in the heart of the entertainment capital of the world. Chosen as home base by the film industry because of its nonstop sunshine and beautiful scenery, Hollywood has become synonymous with making movies. Not only is Los Angeles the center of the world's film industry, but it also plays a central role in dance, music, fashion and art. Trips are planned to the Walk of Fame and Universal Studios (one of the most renowned of the Hollywood studios), the pier, boardwalk and amusement park in Santa Monica and Venice Beach. Visiting filmmakers and actors from the industry drop by at least once per session to screen and talk about their work.
Housing and Meals:
Students in the overnight program stay in the Oxy dormitories and partake in the "all you care to eat" meal plan. The residence hall is a traditional dormitory, with shared bathrooms and mostly double rooms. It is equipped with high-speed ethernet access, laundry facilities, air-conditioning and a computer lab. Students congregate in the common area and have access to a small kitchenette. Students live on single-sex floors, each supervised by Residence Assistants.
Most of SOCAPA's meals will be served in The Marketplace in Johnson Student Center. Marketplace offers a variety of food for students to choose from - wood-fired pizza, made-to-order pasta, deli specialties, fresh baked goods and a salad bar. On the weekends, SOCAPA students go off-campus for trips to area attractions and are responsible for three meals over the weekend while out touring LA.
Students who live locally or who have friends/family to stay with in Los Angeles are welcome to attend the program as Day Students. Day Students commute to campus each day and return home each evening and thus do not pay the Room & Board portion of our fees. However, day students are required to purchase lunch meals from Occidental College meal hall and the fee will need to be paid at the beginning of the session.
Depending on the program, most class activities begin at 9am and end at 5pm, Monday through Friday. Day students are welcome (but not required) to attend any of our structured evening and weekend activities. Day students in the Filmmaking and Acting programs are required to attend Production meetings on the night before shoot days. A full schedule of events is available just prior to the start of the start of the session.
Students attend classes on the beautiful Occidental campus. In addition, there are numerous locations for photo and film shoots, both on campus and in the surrounding neighborhood.
SOCAPA provides evening and weekend activities for boarding students. Ranging from a relaxing cool off swims after a productive and exciting day of class, to karaoke night with friends in the lounge or a viewing of the summer blockbuster hit. Weekends are filled with a sampling of LA's excitement: a fun day at Universal Studios, walking around Hollywood, and getting dinner out on the town. SOCAPA brings together the best parts of summer- having fun with friends and seeing and experiencing new places- and a productive learning experience.
Students at our Los Angeles campus reside in Occidental College residence halls, eat at the dining hall in the Johnson Student Center and attend class in Occidental's facilities. Students are permitted to walk without a counselor around campus- between the dormitory, dining hall, and classrooms. Counselors reside on each floor in the residence hall. Counselors check students in at curfew (10:30 pm) and are on duty all night. Counselors are available for students at all times and ensure the safety of the students.
The High School Program provides highly structured evening and weekend activities that are mandatory. During limited amounts of free time, students may sign out to explore the surrounding area, get supplies, or scout photo and film locations using the Buddy System. In addition, the Buddy System allows students to have some independence during class time and structured evening/weekend activities by allowing students to explore limited surrounding areas while still being with the larger group. This privilege comes with great responsibility and will be revoked upon its first abuse. The "surrounding area" refers to the Eagle Rock business area, which is located between a 15 - 20 minute walk from Oxy Campus.
