Film Program:
Dear SOCAPA,
Thank you so much for all the great experiences you gave to me over the summer. With your help, I was able to make two films that were major influences in my acceptance into NYU film school. I couldn't have done it without all of the support I got at this camp. Nearly everyone at the camp played some role in the creation of my final film and did so on a very personal level. From helping me narrow out my ideas to putting the final touches on the film in the editing room, everybody had a great influence on my movie and on me.Thanks a lot to everyone who helped me become a better filmmaker and get into NYU!
--Nick Z., (17) ~ Cambridge, MA
Dear SOCAPA,
My experience at SOCAPA was great! I learned a lot about filmmaking and at the same time I met wonderful new friends. Classes were interesting, filming was exciting and editing was long but enjoyable. I hope to be able to return to SOCAPA next year!
--Marika A. ~ Athens, Greece
Dear SOCAPA,
The program is excellent. The instructors are amazing, clear, and helpful. The TAs are always there for you. The students are also very interested in helping you in any way they can. We always have something to do whether it is a class, individual work, or a scheduled activity. It is a truly amazing experience. What a great "hands on" experience in filmmaking! The instructors and counselors made learning fun and made me feel comfortable. The two weeks flew by.
--Robbie H. (14) ~ Salt Lake City, UT
Dear SOCAPA,
I am really proud to say that I was in the first graduating class of a phenomenal series of experiences. Under your guidance and teaching I learned more about film in one month than in three years, and I really appreciated the times you took time out to talk with me casually. Looking back at those crazy dorm nights, film shoots, eating dinner downtown, watching 'Shakespeare in the Park' - there were some moments that made my summer awesome.
--Gene K. (14) ~ Manhattan, NY
Dear SOCAPA,
I would like to thank you for making my stay at the SOCAPA an enjoyable experience. Before attending your school, I knew very little about filmmaking. After your two-week program, I now feel confident in going through all the steps of the filmmaking process and have the final product be something I'm proud of. However, even with all that I have learned, I wish to gain more information on the subject. I am seriously considering attending your film school again next year. Thank you for making my time at the school such an amazing learning experience.
-- Bridge S., (15) ~ Seattle, WA
Dear SOCAPA,
It is difficult to say all I would like to in just a few sentences because I hardly know where to begin. I signed up for SOCAPA pretty spontaneously, but within a few days, all doubt vanished. I had a marvelous time, and always felt I was involved in somethingbe it classes or off campus trips. Highly recommended.
--Isabella L., (15) ~ Hong Kong, China
Dear SOCAPA
SOCAPA provided a fun environment for filmmaking, wonderful instructors, beneficial classes and a great atmosphere. I just wish it were longer!
--Kendall A. ~ Austin, TX
Dear SOCAPA,
I had a lot of fun at SOCAPA last summer. I learned tons about film and making movies was awesome. I also met really great people.
--Leora R., (15) ~ CT
Dear SOCAPA,
I think it takes students at SOCAPA a little while to realize just how much they've learnedfor reasons that speak volumes about the program. The instructors are completely unpretentious yet greatly informed and we just have so much fun!
Cubby D., (16) ~ NY
Dear SOCAPA,
Thanks for the DVD's. I got early acceptance to Emerson College (I believe partly due to the movies I made over the summer) and into Fitchburg State College. I also bought a new camera. Well that's all that's new with me.--Adam Ginivisian (17) ~ Boston, MA
Dear Prospective SOCAPA Students,
My name is Carly Hugo, and I'm 17. The director of SOCAPA's Summer Programs, Jamie Yerkes, was my film teacher last summer and he was amazing. Jamie is an extremely talented filmmaker who has the ability to easily convey his knowledge to students. I left his classes feeling like I was able to conquer all in the film world -- he gave me the confidence to think that even a teenager can produce memorable and award-winning films.
I can honestly say that SOCAPA will make you love movies, drama and television 100 times more. I had so much fun and learned a wealth of information about cinematography and the film industry last summer.
I feel that the film school was one of the most important things I've ever done -- it cemented my idea that I wanted to study film in college and become a director (I'm majoring in Film Studies at Columbia University next year). If you think that you want to pursue a career in the industry, or if you just love movies, I really think that you should go to SOCAPA is for you. Really, you will be further ahead than any of your college classmates (when you get there) and you'll have so much fun in the process. I'm returning to the SOCAPA in July for the Advanced Program because I have so much faith in the program and I know that attending will help me in college and once I'm in the industry. I know it will help you too.
- Carly Hugo, (17) ~ Boston, MA
Dear SOCAPA,
SOCAPA is an awesome program that truly opens up your horizons when it comes to film. The people, the atmosphere, and the dining hall meals are great. I am very glad that I came here this summer!
--Dan Fipphen, (16) ~ Fairfield, CT
Acting Program:
Dear SOCAPA,
I had an incredible experience at SOCAPA. I was highly impressed with the knowledge of each and every one of the instructors, program directors, and counselors. Not only do I believe the acting classes improved my abilities as an actor, but the overall experience taught me the basics of film and film production. After attending the camp, my goal of going to college for film studies and my goal of pursuing acting and screenwriting became definite. Not only did I learn an incredible amount, but I made amazing new friends, and I have no doubt that I will always remember the experiences I had at SOCAPA. I highly recommend this program to anyone even the least bit interested in acting or filmmaking.
Thank you,
-- Tom C., New Hampshire
Dear SOCAPA,
SOCAPA was a really awesome experience. I got to learn more about acting and improve my technique through a series of fun and progressive classes. In between classes we got to explore the surrounding area and become close with the other students. I made new friends and got a better idea of how acting for film and theater are different.
Dear SOCAPA,
My experience at SOCAPA was amazing. My teachers and the staff were so nice, and I learned so much! I felt as if I could be independent but also felt very safe. I met so many great and talented people, some of which I stay in touch with. My teachers taught me so much, especially Roger, who taught me just to be myself and if others don't like me that it's just too bad for them. I also learned a lot about acting technique and how I can improve. Making movies with the filmmakers was also so much fun. Next year I definitely want to come back for 3 weeks. I had so much fun in the two weeks and it wasn't enough. I also heard that the third week has a lot of fun things happening, although my stay for 2 weeks was such a great experience.
Dear SOCAPA,
I loved meeting a wide selection of interesting people from around the world. I learned something from every kid that attended SOCAPA. I am much more comfortable in front of the camera because I have learned so many techniques and some of what I have learned I don't think would have been possible anywhere else! Now at home I can show off all my movies to friends, families, and even agents!
Thanks,
Laura
Dear SOCAPA,
I truly felt that SOCAPA's acting for film program was the best acting program I have ever attended. Not only did I learn enormous amounts about acting in the classes, but also I was able to put this knowledge into real-life acting experiences by being part of the students' films. The two weeks I spent at SOCAPA were some of the most informative and enjoyable weeks I've ever had! Meeting people who were not only from all over the country, but also from all over the world, was fantastic! I was able to work with some of the most talented students and skilled teachers I have ever met. The time I spent at SOCAPA helped me immensely in discovering ways to expand my talents. The exposure to acting on cameras was so helpful for me, as well as for anyone who wants to create a serious acting career. I'm grateful that I was able to be a part of SOCAPA NYC 2005 and I will take the things I learned with me for the rest of my life!
Dear SOCAPA,
SOCAPA introduced me o acting techniques that I definitely plan to use in the future. You taught me more about myself, as an actor as well as a person. The teachers are superior and I became close with many of them. I made friendships that I know will last a lifetime. I would highly recommend SOCAPA to any aspiring Actor!

Dear SOCAPA,
SOCAPA is an intensive film and performing arts camp. I incorporated my photography in with the city and will carry the skills I learned here and use them the rest of my photographic life. This program is very exciting and helpful. Tom LeGoff is the best! 2 thumbs up!
--Chloe R., (17) ~ WA
Dear Tom LeGoff,
I really wanted to thank you for all that you taught me. Last summer was absolutely awesome and I will always remember it as the summer that I made the final decision to pursue photography as a career. I was just accepted to Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) photojournalism department and I can honestly say that you are one of my role models and a major reason I am headed in the direction I am now. I have included a picture of myself so that you can see what a leader of tomorrow looks like!

SOCAPA gives us the chance to express our love for the arts while sharing great experiences with new friends. The teachers are talented and encourage us to push ourselves. There should be many more programs like this. An experience every kid should have!

Tom LeGoff was a great teacher. He offered so much to me, more than my other camps had in photography. I learned so many techniques now I can go into a darkroom and print!

Parents:
Dear SOCAPA,
This program brings out any creativity in the students. It is intense, which it should be, and fun at the same time. The hands-on experience is great for the student to really understand what this field of study really entails. My son has come from this 3-week course with greater knowledge. I thank you for your professionalism in dealing with these young adults.
Thank you,
--Wanda Jacobsen, mother of film student from Monroe, NY

I can't say enough about how great SOCAPA was for my daughter. Not only did she learn so much about filmmaking, she also got a taste of what college life will be like. The program was run very smoothly and safely. She also is now absolutely sure that this is what she would like to pursue as a career. The movies she made while at camp will help her in the college admission process as well. Great program!

Dear SOCAPA,
Marika had a great time learning about filmaking at SOCAPA in New York this summer. The course was well organised, giving her plenty of ideas and resources to explore. She's definitely interested to do more. SOCAPA has at the same time a friendly atmosphere. Staff are very supportive and helpful.
-- E. Arapoglou, Athens, Greece
Dear SOCAPA,
Our daughter didn't call home for the first 3 day so you obviously engage the students. We loved the fact that it was hosted on a college campus giving her the opportunity to get the feel for leaving home and living in a dorm. The freedom, with sound supervision, was also great-both in the creative endeavors and living situation. The opportunity to work with professionals and professional equipment was invaluable.
--Ann and Mark from TX, parents of a LA film student
Dear SOCAPA,
Our daughter was in bliss during her three weeks in your program. The quality of teaching was high and their willingness to spend time with her and her friends talking about life was also a wonderful part of her experience.
Dear SOCAPA,
The results were fabulous. Very impressive films from teens, most of whom had never made a film. Our son enjoyed the program immensely. The town of Northampton was perfect, an artsy environment small enough for the teens to explore on their own.
--Joe B., Newburyport, MA, parent of Northampton teen film program
Dear SOCAPA,
The program provided an excellent way for my son to get some real film experience and validate his career interest in pursuing film in college.
--Dean Pavlakis, father of film student from Kenmore, NY
Dear SOCAPA,
My daughter had a wonderful experience at your camp. It was both productive and fun, and we felt the instructors provided a safe and supportive environment.
-- Karen Silverman (Mother of acting student) ~ Michigan
Dear SOCAPA,
I was very pleased with Tom's experience at your school. I think it made a big difference in his life. Not only did he learn about the technical aspects of being a filmmaker; he became a much better student overall. He has a much greater appreciation for education in general. As you know, Tom wants to study film in college. Many of his essays mention different things he learned at SOCAPA. The movie he is submitting to the colleges is one he made during your program. I'm sure that attending your school has made him a much more attractive college candidate.
From a safety standpoint, my wife and I always felt Tom was in good hands at SOCAPA.Thank you for the wonderful letter of recommendation you wrote for Tom. Not only will it be invaluable in the application process, but it greatly boosted Tom's self-confidence. He has great respect for you as a teacher and filmmaker. That letter really meant a lot to him.
--Paul Cryan (Father of film student)
Dear SOCAPA,
What a great program!!! Our son had a wonderful time and we were very impressed with the results we saw at the screening. It is really admirable to get in such short time high quality products with a group of kids that have little to no filmmaking experience. Our son will definitely be back. Two thumbs up!!!
--Pimmy Huisman (Mother of Northampton Youth Student) ~ CT
