Youth Photo Shoots

SOCAPA’s Youth Photography Program for ages eleven to thirteen is run exclusively at our Burlington, Vermont Campus at Champlain College. Students take classes in studio and portrait photography, photojournalism, documentary, fine art photography, Photoshop, darkroom technique, and web publishing (online portfolio).

The curriculum is very similar to that of our High School Program but the pace is more relaxed and fun. Youth Photo Students work closely with partners on group projects which encourages communication and bonding.

Youth CampOur Summer Photography Programs are closely tied to our acting and filmmaking programs. As part of their assignment each week, a photography student may be sent out to shoot production stills on a film production one morning, then off to the studio to light and shoot headshots for an actor that afternoon. In this way, each photography student builds an impressive entertainment portfolio to compliment the documentary and fine art work they do in class and on field shoots. This also allows the photography students to mingle and work with other young visual and performing artists, which often leads to future collaborations and, more importantly, friendships that last a lifetime.

35mm Darkroom & Digital Photography
Our photography programs in Vermont expose students to both 35mm Black & White Darkroom Photography and Color Digital Photography. Students learn to shoot and develop 35mm film and spend an average of twelve hours per week in our gang teaching darkroom. Students also learn color digital photography and on most photo safaris, students will shoot with two different cameras, capturing a mix of both 35mm black & white negative film and color digital files. Students also learn Photoshop editing techniques and portrait studio photography using strobes, flashes and seamlesses. Students in the three-week program are introduced to web publishing during the final week and can create their own online portfolio hosted for free on the SOCAPA server.

Youth Camp Activities:
Nothing beats working with new friends who share your passion and energy for a project but we all need to take an occasional break. Afternoon cool-off swims in Lake Champlain are a must on hot days and who can be in Burlington without a pig-out session at the original Ben & Jerry's factory at least twice a week?! Talent shows, pizza parties, open mic contests, movie nights and Frisbee barbecues have been hugely popular in the past. But the unquestionable highlight of each summer session is the "King of the Art Geeks" (which we endearingly call ourselves) multi-day battle between the Film, Acting and Photography Programs. Serious bragging rights are awarded to the group that wins best-two-out-of-three in the following events: three-legged kickball, whip-cream charades, and costume air-band karaoke.
