Like a semester of school, SOCAPA's summer intensives are broken up by Sessions (abbreviated as S1, S2, S3). Each SOCAPA Session can vary in length between one, two, or three weeks. Sessions can offer an array of intensives.
For example, students enrolled in the [Burlington, VT - Session 3 - (June 22 - July 11)] program can choose from any of the following intensives:

All students share the same arrival date (June 22), but their departing dates differ. A student's departing date is contingent on the duration of the intensive in which they enroll.

Many SOCAPA courses are offered as one, two, or three week intensives.
For example, a student may enroll in the Basic Filmmaking Program as a one week, two week, or three week student during a particular Session. In some cases, two and three week students may form a single filmmaking class. Two week students will leave at the end of the second week and three week students will leave at the end of the third week. Since SOCAPA Sessions can vary in length, not all intensives are available every Session. Please consider how long you would like to attend SOCAPA and note when and where that length of program is offered.
- Supervision Levels -
SOCAPA has two different supervision levels, based on which campus a student attends. The primary difference in supervision level is how much individual responsibility a student needs to take in order to be successful and comfortable at our programs. The supervision levels are as follows:
Manhattan Campus Pre-College Program (Ages 15-19):
Students 15 years or older qualify to attend our Manhattan Program which only offers the Pre-College level of supervision: After the first week of mandatory structured evening activities, pre-college students are given two or three evenings off, allowing them blocks of free time that they can structure to meet their individual interests and needs. This means that students may have from 5:30 - 10:00pm of free time during weeks 2 and 3 of our longer sessions to continue to work on their projects, go see an exhibit, see a movie, etc. Students may sign out using the Buddy System during this free time. In addition, Pre-College students may travel by Subway with their buddy. Students in the Pre-College Program are mature and take personal and group responsibility seriously and are able to handle increased freedom.
Brooklyn NY, Burlington, VT, and Los Angeles Campus High School Program (Ages 13-18):
The High School level of supervision provides highly structured evening and weekend activities throughout the program. During limited amounts of free time, which is typically between 5 and 7pm daily, students may sign out to explore the surrounding area inside specific boundaries set by staff. Students may use this time to get supplies, or scout photo and film locations using the Buddy System. In addition, the Buddy System allows students to have some independence during class time and structured evening/weekend activities by allowing them to explore limited surrounding areas while still being with the larger group. During programmed activities and trips, students still have some independence, always using the Buddy System. For example, when the group goes to the MOMA or to the Farmer's Market, students arrive with a counselor and then are given around two hours to explore the event with a buddy or small group before meeting with the counselor again for a check in.

An Unaccompanied Minor travels without an adult. Each airline has their own regulations regarding the minimum age a traveler must be in order to be considered an adult. Most airlines require Unaccompanied Minor services for children under the age of 14, though some may only require the service for children up to the age of 12. If this service is required:
the airline will alert the the parent or guardian and require additional forms prior to travel
the airline will charge an additional fee for this service
SOCAPA also charges an additional fee for this service
Please speak with the airline first to determine whether this service is required for your child to travel. If it is, you must notify our office so we can assign a staff person to pick your child up at the airport.
*Please note: we cannot provide the name of the person picking your child up until the Friday before the arrival date.
Flights should arrive between 11am and 3pm on the opening Sunday of the session. Our orientation starts at 5pm in NYC and LA and at 4pm in VT. Arriving in this window is important so that we can get you to campus and settled for orientation. Please note that we cannot accommodate students arriving earlier than the opening day of the session.
Flights should depart between 11am and 3pm on the final Saturday of the session. Saturday is a travel day only. There are no activities planned on the final Saturday of the program. Please note that we cannot accommodate students past the session end date.
Flight times outside this window will incur additional transfer fees and generally require transfer by a third party car service or taxi.
At The Airport:
A SOCAPA staff member wearing at SOCAPA t-shirt and carrying a sign with your name on it will greet you at your flight's baggage claim when you arrive. For international flights, we will meet you at the exit from customs. For departure, we will drop you at your airline’s check-in counter when you leave; unfortunately, we cannot escort you beyond security.
Unable to make an interview?
If you cannot come in for an interview, please videotape yourself answering the following questions and upload the interview to a video sharing site (youtube, vimeo, etc.) and include the link with your application. Or submit the interview on CD or DVD along with your paper application.

Why do you ask for a report card?
SOCAPA's Summer Programs are classroom intensive in a residential setting and therefore we want students who want to be in our classrooms during the day and who can abide by our rules at night. Generally, we are looking for students with at least a 'B' average with no disciplinary red flags. For applicants with less than a 'B' average, we may require additional application materials such as a short essay on why the applicant wants to attend our program and/or a reference from a teacher. We understand that some schools and classes are more difficult than others so we make decisions on a case by case basis.
Basically, we want to ensure that the student is passionate about attending our workshops and that they are not going to be a disciplinary problem.
What is a report card?
A Report Card is a document provided by the school that shows the courses the student is taking and the grades/marks/notes that the student is achieving. The document communicates the student's progress and performance in school. It also commonly includes comments and attendance record.
Please print our "print friendly" account statement for your records. Clearly indicate the student's name and your SOCAPA Account ID on any payments. SOCAPA only accepts checks in US Dollars drawn from banks in the USA. If you'd like to send funds from a bank outside the USA then please ask your bank for an International Money Order in US Dollars.
