Description

Core Filmmaking, SOCAPA's most popular intensive, is now online! While the writing room may look different... the Core of the program is the same. From writing roundtables, to collaborative online projects, to peer-led critiques, and final showcase celebrations, SOCAPA's Core Filmmaking Online continues to emphasize the importance of building relationships with other young artists and facilitating creative collaboration.


Comparative to a first-year university course, Core Filmmaking introduces students to the art of cinematic storytelling. Students learn the fundamentals of filmmaking with separate classes in screenwriting, directing, producing, cinematography and editing during their Main Block. And during either Creative Block, students will put their knowledge into action by writing collaboratively in small groups or completing remote assignments in screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and directing.

Schedule

  • Creative Lab 1
    9:30am-11:00am EST(Eastern Standard Time)
    Students have the option to choose from one of two Creative Labs either scheduled before or after the Main Block. This will allow students in different time zones to customize the schedule to best suit their needs. Creative Labs will feature collaborative work in smaller groups, one-on-one advisements with instructors, and individual writing and production time.
  • Main Class
    11:00am-3:00pm EST(Eastern Standard Time)
    Main Class will feature the core content, lectures, screenings, discussions, critiques for the whole class. Main bocks will be consistently scheduled from 11-3pm EST with a 30 minute lunch break at 12:45pm.
  • Creative Lab 2
    3:00pm-4:30pm EST(Eastern Standard Time)
    Students have the option to choose from one of two Creative Labs either scheduled before or after the Main Block. This will allow students in different time zones to customize the schedule to best suit their needs. Creative Labs will feature collaborative work in smaller groups, one-on-one advisements with instructors, and individual writing and production time.

Example Projects

Lumiere
In a single shot of up to two minutes, the student tells a simple story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The project takes its name from the first films by the 19th-century pioneers of early cinema, Pierre and August Lumiere.
Porter
Edwin Porter was one of the first filmmakers to consider the possibilities of editing shots together in a continuous fashion. He led the way in creating the illusion of "continuity," where material shot over the course of days or weeks looks, once it is cut together in sequence, as if it all flows together over the course of minutes. His famous film, The Great Train Robbery, is the inspiration for this second film, where students explore the same issues Porter faced, and make a 2 to 3 minute film that focuses on continuity.

Recommended Gear - Introductory Filmmaking Package

Every filmmaker needs to start somewhere. And while equipment isn't everything - Oscar winning films have been shot on iPhones - here are some recommendations for where to start.

Adobe Premiere Pro
Learn to edit in Adobe Premiere Pro - the go-to editing suite for independent filmmakers. Each student will receive a downloadable version of Adobe Premiere Pro to use during class. Students who wish to edit in another software should discuss the choice with their instructor after class begins.

With a proven track record, Premiere can handle any film project. The learning curve can appear steep, but with an intuitive user interface and a wealth of how-to tutorials online, the basics of Premiere's software can be mastered in a couple hours. It will take you an entire career to discover all the capabilities.
Digital Video Camera
There is no high end camera requirement for Core Filmmaking Online. We are happy to have you shoot on your smart phone. But for those who would like to get experience with a more advanced camera, here are some suggestions.

Firstly, with so many camera options out there it's hard to recommend just one. We suggest you do your research and find the camera that fits your budget and needs. A used Panasonic GH2 - retailing for around $300 - is an amazing camera that created quite the stir when they were released. Featuring interchangeable lens, manual controls, HD recording and an oscillating LCD screen, these cameras are well loved by SOCAPA. Another great used option is the Canon 60D, also featuring interchangeable lenses and HD recording. A good new option, retailing for around $350, is the Canon Rebel T6 - featuring interchangeable lenses, HD video recording. Or the Canon Rebel SL3, $600, which has 4k video recording.
